Julia Muzzatti '18 Selected for 2018 Roundball Classic

Julia Muzzatti '18 has been selected to be a participant in the 2018 Buffalo Wild Wings Roundball Classic All-Star Showcase. The Roundball Classic is the largest high school basketball all-star showcase on the East Coast. The mission of the event is to give youth a platform to perform in front of numerous college scouts and give committed players a chance to showcase their skills for a charitable cause – the Avery Snyder Memorial Fund. Over 650 high school players were nominated to participate this year.

As an all-star player, Julia will participate in the Saturday, March 31 game at the Hub Arena on the campus of North Hagerstown High School.


Hadleigh Locraft '20 Organizes Charity Event

Hadleigh Locraft '20 recently helped organize a teen gala supporting a local organization for individuals with disabilities. The "Journey to inspire, a gala for teens creating change" took place on Sunday, February 11 at the Fillmore in Silver Spring for over 500 teens. Hadleigh served on the planning committee, working on all aspects of the event with a team of other teens since August 2017. The event included a silent auction, dinner, dancing, and inspirational speakers such as Deborah Phelps (mother of Michael Phelps) and John Franklin Stephens. The event supported the organization Devenio, which works to provide opportunities for people with developmental disabilities. Hadleigh personally raised $1,205 for the event through a website promoting the gala and Devenio.


Tartans Participate in Catholic University Honors Band and Honors Chorus

Holy Cross girls recently participated in two programs organized by the Catholic University of America Music Department. On Saturday, January 20, Samatha Miller '18, Belane Ayelework '19 and Siobhan Wompler '20 represented Holy Cross in the Catholic University High School Honor Band. The band is made up of musicians from Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Washington and the surrounding areas. School band directors were asked to nominate outstanding band members to spend the day performing together. Students were given music to audition with so that they would be seated accordingly. The combined band performed two pieces together and one piece with the Catholic University Band.

On Saturday, February 10, Siobhan Martinez '18 and Samantha Miller '18 joined other choir members from different high schools in the Archdiocese of Washington in the CUA Honors Choir. They spent the day at Catholic University singing in combined choirs, having a master singing class and presenting a concert at the end of the day.


Dior Richards '00 Addresses Black History Month Assembly

"Strength Courage Wisdom" was the theme of the annual Black History Month Assembly on Thursday, February 22 sponsored by the Onyx Club. The program included a showing of the video "Origins of Black History Month," a recitation of Maya Angelou's poem "Phenomenal Woman" by Lexington Hart '21, and an acapella performance of "Amazing Grace" by Jeannie Cyrus '18 and Imani Featherson '18.

Alumna Dior Richards '00 addressed the assembly, sharing about her life experiences. Dior spoke about attending Holy Cross and participating in the Black Awareness Society, which later became the Onyx Club. As a Holy Cross student, Dior attended a field trip to tour historically black colleges and universities. She attended Howard University and joined the prestigious Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, one of the largest black women's organizations in the world. Dior described the challenges she faced after graduation with a degree in Biology, and how she encountered situations in her career where she was discriminated against because of her race. She spoke about the courage she found in deciding to leave her career field to follow a new path as a Business Analyst and Director of Operations. She shared about finding a business environment where she now feels valued for all her talents and accepted as an African American woman. Dior challenged the students to recognize the value and strength that comes from diversity. She also gave some practical tips for how to achieve outcomes that support creating a diverse environment.

Two of Dior's classmates, Andrea Williams Sims '00 and Stephanie Sprow '00 also attended the assembly. The three have remained friends since their days as Holy Cross students.


Jillian Dunston '14 Honored by Big Ten

Jillian Dunston '14, a senior at the University of Michigan, has been honored by the Big Ten as a basketball all-defensive team honoree and a sportsmanship award honoree.

An article on the Michigan website states that Jillian is the second player in the Michigan's history to be honored with a spot on the all-defensive team. The article notes, "Dunston draws the toughest defensive assignment in each game, regardless of position. She leads Michigan in rebounding at 9.2 boards per game, putting her fourth in the conference, and in steals with 49."

Rhamat Alhassan '14 Named Volleyball's Honda Award Winner

Rhamat Alhassan '14, a senior at the University of Florida, has been named a 2018 Honda Sport Award for Volleyball. The annual award is presented to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics". The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2018 Honda Cup which will be presented on Monday, June 25, 2018.

Rhamat is a four-time All-American blocker for the Gators who became the first player in Southeastern Conference history to lead the nation in blocks per set (1.70) since the NCAA began tracking the statistic in 1994. It was also the second-highest season average in school history. She said of the honor, "I might be the person being recognized, but it speaks volumes about my coaches, support staff, my teammates, and Gator Nation. No part of this award was achieved individually. It took a family to get this accomplishment."

Theresa Brogan '18 Named Bethesda Magazine Extraordinary Teen

The March/April edition of Bethesda Magazine features the 2018 Extraordinary Teens including Theresa Brogan '18. Theresa was nominated for the honor in November 2017 by Holy Cross. "Theresa Brogan, a senior at The Academy of the Holy Cross, never lets anything hold her back from achieving her goals," began the nomination narrative which featured all the different ways that she is extraordinary. The Bethesda Magazine article highlighted Theresa's passion for performing arts but also noted her academic achievements, athletic accomplishments and service activities.

Theresa is the first student from The Academy of the Holy Cross to be selected as a Bethesda Magazine Extraordinary Teen.

Holy Cross Participates in Model UN Conference

On Saturday, March 3, four girls represented Holy Cross at the Model United Nations Conference at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC. Students from 30 public and private schools in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC came together for the conference. Holy Cross delegates: Rebecca Bisrat '20, Eileen Dinn '19, Arden Ireland '18 and Claire Guarini '18, represented France and Sweden working on the Syrian crisis. Arden and Claire received an Honorable Mention award for their work.

Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the UN General Assembly and other governing bodies. Participants in Model UN explore the fundamentals of the United Nations to better understand our world and foster international awareness. Opportunities are presented for students to learn how to debate, moderate, collaborate, and problem solve under various circumstances.



Empty Bowls Supports Lenten Food Drive

Holy Cross hosted its second Empty Bowls Simple Supper on Thursday, March 1, in support of the Lenten Food Drive for the John S. Mulholland Family Foundation, which serves established food pantries in Washington, DC. The event this year was organized by Campus Ministry, Christian Service, and the Art and Performing Art departments. Guests to the event donated five cans of food or non-perishable items as admittance to the supper. Soups and bread, provided by the Mothers Club, were served in bowls created by students, which guests were given as a keepsake from the event. Open Mic entertainment was organized by the Performing Arts department during dessert.

The Empty Bowls Simple Supper culminated the Lenten Food drive which included a competition between the Purple (Sophomores and Seniors) and White (Freshmen and Juniors). The winning team was announced during the All-School Assembly on Monday, March 5 and was awarded to the Purple team, with only a seven-can difference in donations. Over 1,800 cans were collected during the drive.


LLS Students of the Year Competition has Record-Breaking Success

The fifth annual Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Students of the Year Grand Finale Celebration celebrated a record breaking year on Saturday, March 3. Exceeding all expectations, the 2018 Students of the Year campaign, raised over $2,250,000 for the LLS mission, a world without blood cancers. The seven-week competition engaged 32 candidate teams of high school students including three teams from Holy Cross: Team MLJ Paving the Way (Martha Philipos '19, Julie Joseph '19, London Hall '19); Team The Red Elephants (Ann Myers '19, Jenna Rizik '19, Madelijn Ewers '19); Team Live Life Stronger (Grace O'Connor '19, Ella Torp '19). In addition to the Student of the Year award, candidates were also recognized for their Volunteerism, and Community Involvement, and commitment to the LLS Mission. Team The Red Elephants won the award for Mission and will receive a $2,500 college scholarship in recognition of their award.

Memorial Mass Remembers Deceased Alumnae, Family, and Former Faculty/Staff

Holy Cross celebrated the annual Alumnae Memorial Mass on Sunday, March 4. Alumnae, friends and family members attended the Liturgy, in which 33 alumnae and 58 family members and faculty/staff who died during the past year were remembered. Msgr. John Enzler, whose six sisters graduated from Holy Cross, was the principal celebrant of the Mass. During the service, classmates, friends, and family members brought forward roses in remembrance of the alumnae as their names were read.

A light reception followed the Mass.

On Tuesday, March 6, Holy Cross recognized athletes who played on Winter Sports teams. Each coach presented Most Valuable Player, Most Improved Player, and Tartan awards during the main program and gave individuals recognition in breakout gatherings. The event is organized by the Athletic Director Lisa Schrader and the Holy Cross Athletics Office.

Cultural Diversity Celebrated at International Day Assembly

Holy Cross celebrated International Day on Wednesday, March 14 with a special assembly organized by the International Club and the World Languages Department. The program focused on cultural diversity including the different ethnicities of our student population. Numerous students brought the assembly to life in various ways. Presentations included vocal, dance and instrumental performances, student-created videos and slide shows, and a traditional dress fashion show.

To conclude the celebration, the bilingual folk rock band, Elena & Los Fulanos, performed two numbers while students cheered and danced.

In November, a group of students and faculty from Holy Cross attended the Georgetown Day School Summit on Sexual Assault and Consent. During an all-school assembly on Monday, March 20, the group who attended: Jazmin Campbell '18, Liz Li '18, Josephine Matta '19, with faculty members Megan Minogue and Stephanie Rickards, gave a presentation about the seminar. Their presentation highlighted Consent – how it is defined, what is required for it to be considered valid, and included an informative video. Each of the attendees also spoke about the large and small group sessions they attended.

Holy Cross plans to participate in the summit again next year. Students are encouraged to submit a nomination (available from School Counselors) to attend.


Holy Cross Participates in March for Our Lives

On Saturday, March 24, groups of students, parents, faculty/staff, and alumnae participated in the March for Our Lives in Washington, DC and other cities. The march to promote safety in schools and move forward with more sensible gun laws was organized by students from Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, where a school shooting on Wednesday, February 14 killed 17 students. Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington organized an event for Catholic high school students at St. Patrick's church in Washington, DC, to begin the day. Students (including Holy Cross students) gave personal testimonies about their fears and hopes at the event which included a Mass.

Hair Donation Drive Supports Pantene Beautiful Lengths

The sixth annual Hair Donation Drive, organized by the Social Justice office, took place on Tuesday, March 27 with 20 students and one faculty member donating eight or more inches of their hair. The donated hair will be given to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, which provides free real-hair wigs to the American Cancer Society's wig banks. Cash donations were also collected for those who wanted to support the drive. Stylists from Progressions salon in Rockville generously donated their time and talent to cut and style the donors' hair. The salon provided the donors with gift bags of sample products, coupons, and gift certificates to the salon. Melissa Manuel Leonard '89, a five-year cancer survivor, spoke about her experience with breast cancer, losing her hair and how receiving a real-hair wig made a big difference during her cancer battle.
