This year, The Academy of the Holy Cross Performing Arts department will stage “You Can’t Take It with You,” a humorous straight play, in the fall, and “Sister Act,” the popular musical, in the spring.
Five-Time 2015 Tony Award nominee, “You Can’t Take It with You” celebrates the Sycamore family, whose members gleefully spend their days practicing ballet, playing xylophone, operating a printing press, writing novels, making homemade fireworks, or whatever else they please. When daughter Alice invites her new boyfriend Tony and his serious parents to dinner one evening, the differences between the two families come to the forefront, and hilarity ensues. “You Can’t It with You” is a wacky but poignant reminder to love family unconditionally, to have fun whenever you can, and to live every day to the fullest.
You Can’t Take It with You (by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman) is presented by special arrangement with Dramatist Play Service, Inc., New York.
“Sister Act” (based on the hit 1992 film) tells the story of Deloris van Cartier, a disco singer placed in witness protection after seeing her boyfriend and his crew commit a brutal crime. When her police officer friend sends her to the only place he believes she will be safe – a convent! Deloris becomes Sister Mary Clarence, and begins to learn the ways of the sisterhood and the value of true friendship (while also teaching her new friends a few things of her own). Sister Act features music by Alan Menken and was nominated for five Tony Awards in 2011
Sister Act (music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater, book by Cheri Steinkellner & Bill Steinkellner, additional book material: Douglas Carter Beane) is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized materials are supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com.
