The Holy Cross Mock Trial team won their first round Prosecution competition against Walter Johnson high school on Thursday, January 31. The team will compete in three additional trials against other teams in the county. Students on the team fill the roles of lawyers, witnesses, and bailiff. Students act as prosecutors and defense attorneys and prepare questions for direct and cross examination of witnesses. The student lawyers write and present their own opening and closing arguments and each team calls three different witnesses. Witnesses study the case to learn their part and be able to respond appropriately to direct and cross examination questions. Professional lawyers from the MD State Bar Association volunteer to serve as judges for the trials.
The Maryland State Bar Association sponsors the annual Mock Trial competition that includes almost every high school in the State. The mock trials take place at the County Courthouse in Rockville, MD. The team is comprised of students who are interested in possibly pursuing careers in the legal field.
