On Wednesday, November 3 the Onyx Club visited the Thurgood Marshall Center for Service & Heritage located in the historic Shaw community in Washington, DC. The group was hosted by the President/CEO of the center, Thomasina Yearwood (mother of Taylor Yearwood '05). Mrs. Yearwood spoke about the landmark, which was the home of the first full-service YMCA in the nation to serve African Americans. The location is also where Thurgood Marshall mentored young men and authored portions of the Brown vs. the Board of Education argument. The building was renovated and restored for supportive programs, services and guidance to help families and youth build better lives together. The group toured the exhibits reflecting Supreme Court Justice Marshall's life and legacy.
Prior to the tour, the group had lunch at Ben's Chili Bowl, another landmark in the Shaw community. Owner, Virginia Ali introduced a video about the history of the restaurant and posed for a group photo with the girls.
